Mayor Richard M. Daley and other civic leaders gathered Thursday to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the celebrated revival of the Chicago Theatre District. Daley gathered with local arts leaders to celebrate 10 years of the Chicago Theatre District which began in July 2000. After accepting a framed Playbill showing his photograph with wife Maggie, Mayor Daley said the arts are what define a city.
"To me, there's nothing more important than the arts as the mayor of the City of Chicago, and people ask me, 'Why? Why is it that arts mean so much to you?'" Daley said. "As I travel to find what cities are doing differently and to find out what is happening in different parts of the world, it's always an artist. It's not a politician. It's not a government official. It's not a businessperson. It's an artist."
